The amount of people getting a DUI will get very expensive for 1000’s of first-time offenders in Va.

Starting July 1, an all new state regulation will require men and women declared guilty of their first charge of driving under the influence to drive a vehicle only with an ignition interlock product, which prevents a vehicle from being started when a vehicle owner is inebriated.

Presently, the regulation requires judges to impose the interlocks for first-time offenders with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 percent or higher and for second and subsequent offenses of the DUI law. The legal driving limit is 0.08 percent.

About 4,500 interlock units are mounted in vehicles in Virginia, according to the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program. The figure is predicted to shoot up under the updated statute.

Last year, 245 women and men were killed in alcohol-related crashes in Virginia and 28,162 drivers were declared guilty of DUI, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Not counting insurance hikes, a driver’s 1st DUI can cost between $700-$3,741 in fines, government fees, and costs. A second DUI costs between $2,511-$4,511. A third costs between $2,310-$3,760. A fourth DUI costs between $1,880-$3,380.
